Fred Newman, Nibbies' founder, dies

fred newmanIT IS WITH great regret that Jo Henry, Managing Director of Publishing News Ltd announces the death of Chairman and Founder, Fred Newman, 76, who passed away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday, 12 November in Brighton having battled cancer for some years. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia and three children Mark, Deborah and Stephanie.

After a career in Fleet Street, Fred co-founded Publishing News with Clive Labovitch, a friend from his Oxford days, almost thirty years ago, founding the British Book Awards - more latterly the Galaxy British Book Awards -- in 1989. As the Publishing News Group evolved, it acquired other businesses and formed joint venture interests along the way including Military Illustrated, The BA Christmas Books Catalogue and Book Marketing Limited.

Latterly Fred streamlined his business interests, closing Publishing News and concentrating on other areas. In this he has been increasingly assisted by two members of his family, his son Mark Newman and his son-in-law, Dela Quist. Both Mark and Dela will continue to oversee the future businesses within the Publishing News Group which are operating under Managing Director Jo Henry and existing management teams: The Galaxy British Book Awards; the British Book Industry Awards and the Christmas Books Catalogue (both joint ventures with the BA) and Book Marketing Ltd.

There will be an open service of commemoration on Saturday 22nd November, 12.00pm at The Meeting House, University of Sussex BN1 9RH. All who knew Fred are warmly welcome.

The family would like to collate tributes, anecdotes and myths about Fred and so if anyone would like to contribute a paragraph, they should be e-mailed to Theresa Davis at t.davis@sussex.ac.uk by Wednesday 19th November.

No flowers please but donations if desired made payable to 'Macmillan Cancer Support', 'The Martlets Hospice' or 'Battersea Dogs Home' to be sent c/o Attree & Kent, 108 Church Road, Hove, East Sussex BN3 2EB.
