new contender for the top prize,
with Hexham's Cogito Books
once again heading the North &
Midlands regional entry.

inspirational. A host of enthusiastic,
intelligent and creative people
greet you off the pages of
the submissions, and I am struck
by how much these bookshops
offer their communities over and
above what might be expected of
a local business. The more obvious
criteria are met, and overtaken,
by all the added extras which
they offer; the innovative events,
the loyalty cards, the engagement
with the digital world, unique
responses to environmental issues
and involvement with communities,
and all from within the limitations
of often a very small square
footage."
